Trick 1: Beg Start dog in sit position. Slowly, with food treat in fingers, raise the hand just up over its nose and wait for it to bring the front legs up only. Reward it for bringing them up while staying seated. Say the word BEG as its legs come up. Tip: Dogs with long thin backs or short, barreled bodies find this trick hard to do because they cannot balance well. Trick 2: Wave This is for dogs that already know how to shake. When asking for a shake, move your hand away so that it misses and reward it for doing so. This encourages it to paw the air. Then change the word over to WAVE when it does the action. Once it responds to the word, change the hand signal to your hand waving. Trick 3: Back up/reverse Great for getting out of tight situations or dancing. Have you dog standing first, then slowly with treats in fingers walk in towards your dog and move your hand in towards it too. As it takes a few steps back, reward it. Keep going until it can walk back about 10 steps. Use the word BACK Up while it is moving backwards. Tip: To stop it sitting down, take it slow and keep your hand slightly lower rather than higher. Trick 4: Roll over Great for teaching dog to accept belly rubs, expose belly and relax. Ask dog to lie down first. With treats in fingers, slowly bring your hand up around the neck, then shoulder then over the back, waiting for it to bring its legs over. Use the word ROLL OVER as it rolls. Tip: You need to start from the side where both hind legs are. Trick 5: Weave Great agility and accuracy skill. You can use legs, poles, trees, people, etc. Start by standing with your dog to the side of you and with your legs apart, left leg back, right leg forward. Show the dog the treat and ask it to go through your legs and reward it when it does. Then change leg position, by taking one step forward and ask it to follow your other hand. Tip: Take it slow and slowly increase how many times it weaves though before rewarding it. Trick 6: Bow Natural body position for play initiation and calming other dogs down. Have dog in a stand position and slowly, with treats in fingers, bring the hand down to the floor between its feet. As it bends the elbows down while keeping the rump up, reward. Begin to say the word BOW as it moves down. Then add a hand signal: tip of a hat, curtsy, etc.

Trick 7: High 5 Teaches dogs to target with their feet. Have the dog sitting. With a treat in your fingers, raise your hand up over its head so it is just out of reach. As soon as it raises a paw off the ground, reward it. Continue this until it brings it up higher and eventually makes contact with the hand. Say the word SHAKE or HI 5 as the paw moves up and then add a hand signal such as offering a hand. Trick 8: Spin While your dog is standing, slowly get it to follow a treat in your fingers around in a circle. Start, using the word SPIN or AROUND as it moves. Change speeds and directions. Tip: I do not recommend continuous spinning as it can drive some dogs crazy, work on figure 8’s instead or one spin only.Trick 9: Bang, you’re dead More advanced trick but basically it is a half roll over from a sit or stand. Work on getting the dog to drop on its side from a lie down position first and quickly. Then work on doing it from a sit position and eventually from a standing position. Reward for each successful stage. Bring in the word BANG when it drops to its side. Then bring in a hand signal to coincide with it.Trick 10: Speak Great for personal self-defence. Rev or excite the dog up until it begins to bark. As soon as it barks, reward it with a treat. Repeat this and start saying SPEAK just before it is about to bark. Then slowly bring in the hand signal (opening hand) when you say the word. Tip: This will only work if your dog is vocal. Be careful not to reward unless you ask for it or it will encourage attention-seeking barking.Trick 11: Leave Teaches dog excellent self-control and also how to wind down after being aroused. Play tug with a toy and wind it up. When it is excited, use the word LEAVE or OFF and wait until it releases the toy. Reward it with a treat immediately for letting go. Repeat the game until it lets go instantly. Tip: This game is not suitable for dogs under 12 months as they often do not have enough self-control and it can also spur on aggressive behaviours.Trick 12: Chin Great for teaching dog to keep its head still, for grooming, touching, handling, vet visits.Have an open flat hand in front of your dog’s face. With your other hand, have a treat and ask your dog to follow it over the open hand. When it places the head in your open hand, say the word CHIN. Encourage it to place its head there automatically and reward it for doing so. Tip: Also teach the word HOLD so it learns to stay in that position. Work on touching it and distracting it to strengthen its ability to stay still. |
